The City of Somerville will be implementing quick-build traffic calming and pedestrian-focused safety improvements on Broadway near the intersections of Simpson Avenue and Wallace Street/Leonard Street. This project will include making changes to the street using tools like new pavement markings and plastic flex posts. It will not include any major construction. We anticipate installing this project in the spring of 2026 and sharing a final design later this winter.

We prioritized these two locations for quick-build safety improvements because of high rates of vehicle speeding, crash history, and community feedback about crosswalk safety concerns. In November 2024, the City of Somerville received a federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant that awarded the City funding to install quick-build pedestrian safety improvements on Broadway within the limits of Alewife Brook Parkway and Powder House Circle. In 2025, we collected up to date vehicle speed and volume data and began initial design development for the intersections at Simpson Avenue and Wallace Street/Leonard Street.
