Check out the East Washington Quick Build Safety Improvements Pre-Concept Community Engagement Report
From May 7 to August 11, 2026, we worked to engage community members in the first phase for the East Washington Street Quick-Build Safety Improvements project. During this phase, we aimed to promote awareness about the quick-build project, hear insight into how the street is used, learn about community members’ safety concerns and gather feedback on ways to make it safer and more comfortable for all people using the street.
We introduced the project at a virtual community meeting on June 17, 2026, and spent the following months engaging community members through other outreach activities, including:
Hosting a street outreach pop-up at the Tufts Street, Washington Street and New Washington Street intersection
- Conducting an online feedback survey and input map
- Meeting with businesses one-on-one along the project area
- Attending a Washington Street business focus meeting with East Somerville Main Streets
- Presenting to Cantonese, Mandarin and Portuguese speaking seniors at the Ralph and Jenny Center
- Hosting an office hour at Cobble Hill Apartments
- Sharing information at SomerStreets Carnaval
- Tabling at the Ralph and Jenney Center
- And meeting with our Pedestrian and Transit Advisory Committee and Somerville Bicycle Advisory Committee
We’d like to thank community members who participated and shared feedback! Please check out our East Washington Street Quick-Build Safety Improvements Phase 1 Community Engagement Report which describes all the outreach activities we held and what we heard.
We will use this feedback to guide our design development for the next phase of this project. We plan to share these options with the public in early 2027. Please continue to share feedback or ask questions by emailing transportation@somervillema.gov or calling us through 311 (617-666-3311).
