Growing Season #3

2026 is the third season of our growing micro-forest and it is getting tall! Many of the plants are well over 6 feet tall and counting. The elderberry and black cherry are still the fastest-growing trees in the forest and there are berries everywhere. We are also seeing some of the slower-growing species getting taller. We planted many oaks and hickories and they prefer shadier conditions. So, as the trees around them get bigger, the oaks and hickories will grow stronger in the dappled shade.

These young trees are facing some challenging conditions on our site. There is a lot of wind, bright sun, high temperatures, and occasional drought conditions. While this will mean that some don't make it, the ones who survive should be well adapted to thrive in this location into the future. Come watch it grow with us!

All are welcome to visit the forest (after school hours). While it's too dense to easily walk inside, take a look at the edge, peer in, and see which plant species you can spot. Do you see any birds feeding on berries in the forest? Do you see any insects? Did you volunteer to plant the forest? Can you spot any that you put in the ground?
