Check out the Phase 1 Community Engagement Report

From May 20 to July 25, 2025, we worked to engage community members in the first phase for the Somerville Avenue Quick-Build Safety Improvements project. During this phase, we aimed to promote awareness about the quick-build project, hear insight into how the street is used, learn about community members’ safety concerns and gather feedback on ways to make it safer and more comfortable for all users.
We launched the project with a virtual community meeting hosted on June 9, 2025 and spent the following months engaging community members through other outreach activities, including:
- Hosting three street outreach pop-ups at major intersections in the project area
- Conducting an online feedback survey and input map
- Meeting with businesses one-on-one along the project area
- Attending the Union Square Main Streets Monthly Business Meeting
- And meeting with our Pedestrian and Transit Advisory Committee and Somerville Bicycle Advisory Committee
We’d like to thank community members who participated and shared feedback! Please check out our Somerville Avenue Quick-Build Safety Improvements Phase 1 Community Engagement Report which describes all the outreach activities we held and what we heard. We estimate that we heard from over 490 people in these efforts.
We will use all the comments in the Community Engagement Report to guide design options for the next phase of this project. The project team plans to share these options with the public in Spring 2026. Please continue to submit comments and concerns by emailing transportaion@somervillema.gov, call us at 617-666-3311 or sign up for the Mobility Monthly Newsletter for project updates.
