Soil Abatement Work as Part of Sidewalk Reconstruction near 50 Tuft Street - Begins Tuesday, June 9 or Soon After
Somerville was home to a range of industries throughout our history. Over time these activities contaminated some of the underlying soils.
During planning for reconstruction of Tufts Street, the City engaged a licensed site professional (LSP) to analyze soil samples throughout the project area. The results of the sample analysis indicated one location (within the sidewalk area adjacent to 50 Tufts St.) tested positive for low levels of a volatile organic compound (VOC) more than 5 feet below street-level. Contaminated soils will be removed from the site and disposed of in accordance with all relevant safety guidelines. This work does not pose a health risk to neighbors or people using the street.
What to Expect During Sidewalk Reconstruction near 50 Tufts Street. Starting June 9th
- To ensure the safety of construction crews, work to rebuild sidewalks at this location will be conducted and monitored in accordance with state-approved work plans following all safety regulations and under the supervision of licensed site professionals.
- Workers may be seen wearing protective gear during this process. This is for the safety of individuals who may be in direct contact with the contaminated soils.
- This work does not pose a health risk to residents in the area.

- Work is expected to begin Tuesday, June 9, or soon after (weather permitting) and last up to 1 week.
- Work hours are weekdays, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
