Preliminary Parking Changes and Pavement Markings Work Begin This Summer

This Thursday, July 30, or soon after, City contractors will begin implementation for the Elm-Beacon Connector.

New Parking Signage and Pavement Markings Installation on Elm Street

As the first phase of this project, crews will install new parking signage and pavement markings (street paint) on Elm Street and at adjoining side streets.

Schedule of Work (subject to change due to weather or other factors)

  • Signage installation is expected to take place between late July and mid-August
    • Work hours are weekdays between 7 a.m. and approximately 3 p.m.
  • Pavement markings are expected to be installed starting in mid-August
    • Work hours are overnight between the hours of 8 p.m. and 4 a.m.
    • Nightwork required for any particular section of roadway within the project area is expected to limited to approximately 3-4 nights across the duration of the project’s implementation.

Implementation Lookahead

Following this initial phase of work on Elm Street, crews will shift their efforts to segments of the project area on Somerville Avenue, Beacon Street, and Mossland Street. We anticipate that traffic signal upgrades will be installed in September. When all pavement markings work is complete, we will then move to close motor vehicle access to Mossland Street from Elm Street. As work progresses, we will post updates to this project webpage.

Construction Impacts

While this work is underway residents should expect,

  • Temporary parking restrictions to facilitate the installation of new pavement markings.
  • Permanent parking changes will also be going into effect as new signage is installed.
  • Some elevated noise levels and lights from construction trucks and equipment

We do not anticipate that MBTA Bus Routes 87 and 83 will be impacted during the implementation of this work.
