Public Electric Vehicle Charger in use by City of Somerville Municipal EV

The City of Somerville is participating in the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center’s On-Street Charging Solutions Program, which is working to identify locations to install new public electric vehicle (EV) chargers along Somerville's streets. Somerville's Climate Forward Plan envisions a City where by 2050, 100% of registered passenger vehicles in Somerville are electric or plug-in hybrid. By installing public-access charging infrastructure in places that are near to local businesses, areas of multi-family housing without easy access to at-home charging, and in districts with Environmental Justice populations, we hope to maximize the benefit and impact of these community amenities.

Informed by the City's work to develop a Siting Strategy for EV Chargers, ten sites across the city were evaluated through Summer 2025 and six were selected for installation. The sites that will see new charging stations are:

  • Teele Square, at 6 Newbury Street.
  • Ball Square, at 131 Josephine Ave.
  • Hudson Labyrinth, at 139 Hudson Street
  • Evergreen Ave, at 63 Evergreen.
  • Prospect Hill Park, across from 51 Munroe Street
  • Stone Ave, at 11 Stone Ave.

These sites were selected due to their electrical installation feasibility, locations in neighborhoods with limited driveway charging options, cost, and the feedback OSE received on community preferences from multiple engagement efforts. Additional community engagement will be forthcoming to keep community members up to date on construction timeline and expected traffic impacts during construction. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2026.
