Western Pearl Street Transportation Safety Concerns and Needs Survey

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on Western Pearl Street, between McGrath Highway and Medford StreetThe City is planning to reconstruct the sidewalks and repave the street over the next couple of years. As part of this effort, we aim to explore a new design that makes it safer for people walking, rolling, biking, taking the bus, and driving. We want to hear about your experience on the street, listen to your transportation safety concerns, and gather feedback on ways to improve Western Pearl Street

Please take this 5 to 7-minute survey to provide your input on the future redesign of Western Pearl Street and tell us a bit about yourself. For more details about the project:

  • check out details on the project website
  • review the community meeting presentation slides (available in English)
  • watch the recording of the virtual community meeting held on October 9, 2024 (available in English)

You can also call us at 311 (617-666-3311) if you would prefer to conduct the survey over the phone or email your feedback to our team at transportation@somervillema.gov. If you want to get regular email updates about the project, please subscribe to the Monthly Mobility Newsletter.

How concerned are you about your safety when traveling on Western Pearl Street?

Repave the street
Reconstruct the sidewalks
Provide landscaped areas for more trees, plants, and greenery
Widen sidewalks
Shorten crossing distance
Improve safety at existing crosswalks
Add more crosswalks across Pearl Street
Add more benches and trash cans along the street
Add protected bike lanes in one or both directions
Add more bike parking or Bluebikes stations
Improve bus stop experience such as installing bus shelters or benches
Improve bus reliability and reduce delay
Decrease speeding
Decrease the number of vehicles traveling on the street
Reduce the number of vehicles using side streets to bypass major streets
Maintain some on-street parking
Modify parking to include more loading zones, quick pickup, and drop-off options
Provide accessible parking
Reduce the frequency of illegal parking on crosswalks or in no parking areas
7.

Pearl Street is narrow enough that implementing two-way protected bike lanes would require removing all existing parking on the street and limiting the ability to shorten crossing distances with curb extensions, expand the sidewalk to provide more space for people walking and rolling, and create wider bus stops. We want to better understand the community’s needs for the street and explore options. Please choose which option you would prefer the most at this time?
