As part of the City’s Pavement and Sidewalk Management program, the City plans to reconstruct sidewalks and repave Pearl Street from McGrath Highway to Medford Street. Since 2015, the City has taken a data driven approach to analyze street and sidewalk quality and prioritize locations rooted in equity, safety, and accessibility for this program. With the opportunity to reconstruct the street, the City aims to increase safety, improve accessibility, incorporate more sustainability, and create a more comfortable street. We aim to do this by:

As part of the City’s Pavement and Sidewalk Management program, the City plans to reconstruct sidewalks and repave Pearl Street from McGrath Highway to Medford Street. Since 2015, the City has taken a data driven approach to analyze street and sidewalk quality and prioritize locations rooted in equity, safety, and accessibility for this program. With the opportunity to reconstruct the street, the City aims to increase safety, improve accessibility, incorporate more sustainability, and create a more comfortable street. We aim to do this by:

  • Reconstructing all the sidewalks along Pearl Street from Medford Street to McGrath Highway, along with approximately 20 feet into intersecting streets
  • Repaving the street from sidewalk curb to sidewalk curb
  • Adding accessible curb ramps to all existing crosswalks
  • Exploring opportunities for new crossings in addition to installing safety improvements like raised crosswalks/intersection or curb extensions
  • Identifying locations for new trees, replacing tree stumps, and considering tree bump outs or expanding the tree wells to support tree longevity
  • Installing protected bicycle facilities
  • Incorporating “Clear Corners” at each intersection to increase the visibility for people driving turning or moving through the intersections

This segment of Pearl Street is designated for two-way protected bicycle facilities in the Somerville Bicycle Network Plan and codified in the Safe Streets Ordinance. Pearl Street is narrow enough that implementing two-way protected bike lanes would require removing all existing parking on the street. This narrow width could also limit the ability to shorten crossing distances with curb extensions, expand the sidewalk to provide more space for people walking and rolling, and provide curb access for activities like deliveries or some residential parking.

With these potential significant trade-offs, we want to facilitate a robust community engagement process to better understand the community’s needs for the street and explore options. These options may include providing one direction of protected bike facility on Pearl Street and using a different neighborhood street to serve the other direction. Another option may be to consider one-way motor vehicle travel on Pearl Street in order to achieve other community goals for the street.

From October through November 2024, we aim to gather your feedback on transportation safety concerns you have for the street and your priorities for the future. Over the winter, we will work on a concept design shaped by the feedback we heard in addition to analysis of data we aim to collect such as vehicle speed, vehicle volume, and parking utilization. In Spring 2025, we aim to publish a concept design and conduct another round of community engagement. Over the summer, we will work to refine the design to bring an updated version in Fall 2025 for more community input. We will then work to finalize the design to prepare for construction between 2026 and 2027.

    Final Design Update

The City of Somerville has a final design for the Western Pearl Street Reconstruction project. After nearly a year and a half of engaging community members, exploring design alternatives, collecting traffic data, testing emergency operations, and developing a design, the City has prepared a new vision for Pearl Street between Medford Street and McGrath Highway that includes:

    Street Condition Improvements

    • A repaved road.
    • Reconstructed sidewalks.

    Pedestrian Improvements

    • Accessible curb ramps at all existing and new crosswalks.
    • Curb extensions at intersections along Pearl Street.
    • Raised crosswalks across side streets that intersect with Pearl Street and across Pearl Street at Wigglesworth Street.
    • Raised crosswalks across two sections of Medford Street with a realigned intersection at Pearl Street.
    • Raised intersections at Marshall Street and Walnut Street.

    New Bicycle Facilities

    • A two-way protected bike lane from Medford Street to Skilton Avenue.
    • A one-way protected bike lane heading eastbound between Skilton Avenue and McGrath Highway.
    • Enhanced Neighborway connections through Skilton Avenue and Ed Leathers Park connecting to the existing Gilman Street Neighborway.

    Parking Changes

    • Two fully accessible parking spaces.
    • Two loading zones.
    • Parking options primarily on the north side of the street.
    • 9 spaces on Pearl Street and 3 spaces on some nearby side streets removed.

    Bus Improvements

    • One floating bus stop and 3 in-lane bus stops.
    • Two bus shelters near Marshall Street.

    More Amenities

    • More benches around Triangle Park and Medford Street.
    • And 22 new trees.

This design follows the goals set out in the City’s Vision Zero Action Plan to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries on our streets and the vision of the Somerville Bicycle Network Plan to create a connected network for people of all ages and abilities to travel by bike. The design was shaped from community members stories and feedback heard in conversations on the street, at our open houses, in small businesses and community events, in surveys and emailed comments collected throughout design development. Some examples of key features that were guided by community input include:

    • A new crosswalk across Medford Street to increase safety and enhance connectivity to the Gilman Square MBTA Green Line Station and Community Path.
    • A raised intersection at Walnut Street to reduce speeding and prioritize people using the crosswalks in the area.
    • Bicycle options that provide safer connections around the neighborhood and maintain curbside access options for residential, visitor/customer, delivery, and home healthcare worker parking.

Click here to see the Final Illustrative Plan. For more details, please check out the Sign and Pavement Markings Plan and Bike Circulation diagram. For an overview of the project and presentation on the final design, please check out this presentation which includes the proposed parking regulation changes to be presented to the Traffic Commission on February 12.

We are so grateful to all the community members who participated in the development of this design sharing their transportation safety concerns, preferences for design directions and conceptual design options, and providing ideas to incorporate. To learn more about what community members shared with us throughout design development as well as to see how we engaged people, please check out our Pre-Concept, Concept Design Options, and Updated Design Community Engagement Reports. You can also learn more about the story of this project by exploring the newsfeed on this project website.

Additional Street Safety Improvements in the Area

Walnut Street at Pearl Street Traffic Signal Changes

We continue to develop a plan and evaluation process to test decommissioning the red/yellow/green signal on Pearl Street at Walnut Street. We anticipate piloting this signal change following the construction of the raised intersection at this location. We will add any updates to this work on this project website.

Quick-Build Protected Bike Lanes on Medford Street from Pearl Street to School Street

We plan to install protected bike lanes in both directions on Medford Street to connect the new facilities on Pearl Street to the existing two-way bike lanes on School Street heading towards the Community Path. We anticipate removing 4 on-street parking spaces to make space for these quick-build bike lanes. We shared these designs throughout Western Pearl Street public outreach. We believe it makes sense to complete this quick-build work at the same time as the new design for Western Pearl Street is implemented. We will include updates to this work on this project website and on the Medford Street and School Protected Bike Lanes website.

    Next Steps for Design

On February 12, we will present to the City’s Traffic Commission to seek approval for the parking regulation changes. These changes primarily include requesting that parking be relocated to the north side of the street, be restricted in locations where new crosswalks are called for and be spaced to comply with the City’s Clear Corners regulations. We are also proposing to convert some 2-hour except by permit spaces to new accessible spaces and loading zones.

    Looking Ahead to Construction

Pending Traffic Commission approval, the City will put the design out to bid for a construction contractor later this winter. We will work to secure a contractor so that construction could begin during the 2026 construction season and be completed by November 2027. Once we have selected a contractor and have a preliminary construction schedule, we will provide an update on this project website indicating when and where we anticipate work will begin.

On October 4, we shared the Updated Design for our Western Pearl Street Reconstruction Project. We refined the design from three design directions in October 2024, to two Concept Design Options in May 2025, to one Updated Design for October 2025. We spent the next four weeks in the fall of 2025 working to connect with community members to get final feedback before we finalize the design and prepare for construction.

We hosted a range of in-person and online outreach activities to provide options for folks to give feedback. We thank all community members who were able to talk to us at tabling events, join our open house, take our survey, or talk to us on the street for giving your time to share feedback.

We are excited to publish our final community engagement report for the design development of this project. This report describes all the outreach activities we held, and all the feedback we gathered. Our goals in this phase of the project were to build awareness of the Updated Design; to welcome and address any clarifying questions; and to confirm whether community members felt that the Updated Design met our safety objectives.

Over the winter, we will continue to use this feedback to shape our final design. We anticipate publishing the final design by early next year and then working to prepare a bid for construction.

Other Updates in the Neighborhood: As part of the Somerville Bicycle Network Plan and through funding provided by the City’s Participatory Budgeting, the City aims to install protected bike lanes on Medford Street between Pearl Street and School Street and upgrade the protected bike lane barriers on School Street between the Community Path and Medford Street.

The new facilities on Medford Street will include a two-way bike lane on the southside of the street protected with pre-cast concrete curb barriers and plastic flex posts. To make space for these new facilities, we aim to remove three parking spaces on the northside and shift the northbound and southbound motor vehicle travel lanes slightly north. These changes will not impact the bus stop located at the intersection of Medford Street and School Street.

The City installed a similar design temporarily with flex posts in the summer of 2023 for the Community Path detour while work was being completed on the Somerville High School athletic field.

On School Street, in the existing two-way protected bike lanes between the Community Path and Medford Street, the City will replace many of the flex posts with pre-cast concrete curbs.

In May 2025, the City published concept design options for our Western Pearl Street Reconstruction project. We spent the next month engaging community members to gather feedback and promoting the project to spread the word about the street redesign. Mobility Division staff hosted an outdoor open-house event in mid-May, and from May to late June we hosted two virtual office hours, held a street outreach pop-up, conducted an online survey, posted flyers to more than 380 homes, held a youth focus group with Groundwork Somerville, held a meeting with Pearl Street Park residents, met with Gilman Square Neighborhood Council members, tabled at the Carnaval street festival and met with the Pedestrian and Transit Advisory Committee and the Somerville Bicycle Advisory Committee. We’d like to thank all our community members and partners who participated and supported this important work!

We are proud to document all this work in the Western Pearl Street Reconstruction Concept Design Community Engagement report, which describes all the outreach activities we held, and publishes all the feedback we heard. The beginning of the report summarizes what we gathered, and each section describes the specific comments and feedback that we collected. We estimate that we spoke with 283 people in this phase of the project.

City staff are now working to incorporate this public feedback into the next phase of the design. We anticipate bringing an 80 Percent Design to community members in the fall, with another round of public feedback that will help us work towards finalizing the design over the winter and preparing for construction to take place between 2026 and 2027.

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, Ward 4 Councilor Jesse Clingan, Ward 1 Councilor Matt McLaughlin, and City staff invite you to an outdoor open house to discuss the proposed concept design options for Pearl Street between McGrath Highway and Medford Street.

    Date & Time: Wednesday, May 7, from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. (Rain date: Thursday, May 8)

Location: Ed Leathers Park, 98 Walnut Street (between Walnut Street and Skilton Avenue)

About the event: The City of Somerville is planning to reconstruct sidewalks, repave, and redesign Western Pearl Street between McGrath Highway and Medford Street to improve safety, accessibility, and sustainability. In the fall of 2024, we gathered community feedback on preferred design directions. Shaped by that input, we’ve developed two conceptual design options.

Join us at our upcoming open house to learn about these conceptual design options for the street and share your feedback!

The open house will feature multiple stations describing different aspects of the project. Drop-in anytime during the event to review materials and talk with project team members about your feedback and questions. Pizza will be provided.

If inclement weather is forecasted: If rain or extreme heat is forecasted for May 7, approximately 48 hours ahead of time, we will update this webpage and share if we plan to gather on the rain date. We will also send a note to our direct email list and send a City Alert to subscribers in the nearby area. If you are not already on and want to be on our direct email list, please send your request to transportation@somervillema.gov.

Other ways to learn more and provide feedback on the design options: We aim to provide a range of options to learn and engage in this phase of the project.

    • Recorded presentation: Within a week of the open house, we will upload a recorded presentation going through the same materials presented at the open house.
    • Design feedback survey: From May 7 through June 13, community members can share their feedback via our online survey. The survey will be available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Nepali, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. If you prefer to take this survey via phone, call 311 (617-666-3311) and submit a call back request.
    • Street Outreach Pop-Up: Come talk to us on the street. We are aiming to host a pop-up at the intersection of Medford Street and Pearl Street on May 14 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. If inclement weather is forecasted, check the website approximately 48 hours ahead for event updates.
    • Virtual Office Hour: Join City staff on a Zoom webinar on May 22 anytime between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to ask your questions and share your comments directly with staff.

Community group outreach and community events: Between May 8 and June 13, we will also be scheduling meetings with local community groups, visiting nearby small businesses, and tabling at SomerStreets Carnval.

Questions: At anytime, please feel free to reach out to the Mobility Division with your questions and comments by email at transportation@somervillema.gov or by calling 311.
