Following the completion of the Green Line and Community Path extension, the City of Somerville is planning to expand and improve Somerville Junction Park. In addition to being an important neighborhood passive park, Junction Park will become an important node and resting place along the Community Path. The City has hired a design consultant to lead the design and community process in Spring 2022. Potential new amenities at an expanded Junction Park may include community gardens, water play, and adult fitness equipment.

Update: Paving of the newly built path was completed on 6/7 and the path between Lowell Street and Central Street reopened. Work will continue on the southern portion of the park site.

The entrance to the path at Centre Street/Woodbine Street will remain closed through the next phase of construction.

Thank you for your patience during the temporary closure.

Beginning Monday, June 3 or soon after, people walking, wheeling, or cycling on the Community Path between Lowell Street and Central Street will be detoured around the new Somerville Junction Park site.

This temporary detour (approximately 1 week, weather permitting) will enable City Contractors to pave the newly built path and loam/seed green space along the northern half of the park. Following paving, the new path will be opened to the public and work on the park will transition to the southern half of the park where the temporary community path currently sits.

    24/7 Pedestrian and Cyclist Detours

    Pedestrian detours

    • Eastbound (toward Union Square) - Using the existing ramp to exit the path, people walking or wheeling eastbound will be directed south on Lowell Street, east on Albion Street, and north on Central Street to reconnect with the path.

    • Westbound (toward Davis Square) - People walking or wheeling westbound will be directed south on Central Street, west on Albion Street, and north on Lowell Street before returning to the path via the existing ramp.

    Cyclist detours

    • Eastbound (toward Union Square) - Using the existing ramp to exit the path, people cycling eastbound will be directed north on Lowell Street, east on Vernon Street, and south on Central Street to reconnect with the path.

    • Westbound (toward Davis Square) - People cycling will be directed south on Central Street, west on Albion Street, and north on Lowell Street before turning to the path via the existing ramp.

On-site detour signage will be installed prior to the detour going into place. Once in place, the detour will be in effect 24 hours a day.

Once in the detour is place, no one will be allowed in the park and the detour will be in effect 24 hours a day. Community path users and community members are reminded to please use caution while traveling along detour streets in residential neighborhoods.

While the community path will be reopened after the new path is paved, the park will remain under construction and is expected to open in spring of 2025.
