Kennedy School Playground Renovation
The Cherry Street schoolyard at the Kennedy School has funding from the Community Preservation Act (CPA) to hire a landscape architecture firm to design a new, inclusive playground. The project is managed by the City’s Public Space and Urban Forestry (PSUF) division. A design firm is now under contract, and the public process for input into the new schoolyard is underway. We are asking for involvement from the school community (students, teachers, parents), neighborhood residents, and other City departments. Please check here, on the SomervilleParks Instagram account, or on the City’s social media for dates and times for public meetings. Thank you for your involvement.

The project team received great feedback, both at our first public meeting and through the first online survey. Thank you for helping us identify your priorities for this project! If you missed the meeting or want to see larger views of the plans, a recording is available on the right hand side of the project's SomerVoice page.
The three initial concepts presented are shown above. Since pieces of each plan can be combined in the preferred design, we'd like you to consider these plans as a "kit of parts." The following pages ask questions about how you feel each of several key elements works best. -

Understanding Inclusive Playground Design
Share Understanding Inclusive Playground Design on Facebook Share Understanding Inclusive Playground Design on Twitter Share Understanding Inclusive Playground Design on Linkedin Email Understanding Inclusive Playground Design linkThe City of Somerville is working to create its first inclusive playground at the Kennedy School. This location has been identified as an ideal site for such a project due to the school’s specialized SEEK and SKIP programs, which cater to children with diverse learning needs.
The design of the new playground will focus on creating a universally designed, sensory-rich environment that allows children to develop physically, socially, and emotionally. The goal is to create an engaging space that provides the “just-right level of challenge,” offering opportunities for children to succeed while also meeting a variety of needs and interests. This will go beyond the minimum accessibility standards set by the ADA to ensure the playground accommodates not only children with physical disabilities but also those with social and emotional needs.
What Makes It Inclusive?
Inclusive design prioritizes the creation of environments that are accessible, engaging, and equitable for children of all abilities. This includes providing sensory play experiences, adaptive equipment, and spaces that foster social interaction. These playgrounds are built to ensure that every child can participate, no matter their abilities.

In the coming weeks, these efforts will broaden to include school staff, parents, students, and the wider public.
As part of these efforts, you'll begin to see a variety of events aimed at gathering feedback from parents and the public about the space. Upcoming events include:
- Kennedy Back to School Night – September 25th, 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM
- Pick-up and Drop-off Tabling – Weekly
- Ward 5 Community Meeting – October 7th, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM
- A public survey will also be opening in the next few weeks, inviting input from the community. Be sure to visit the website for more details and updates on the survey release.
- Parent Teacher Conferences – November 18th
In parallel with the public meetings, city staff will meet with school staff during their professional development days and hold office hours to continue refining a design that meets the school’s needs.

Project Update: Designer RFP Contracting
Share Project Update: Designer RFP Contracting on Facebook Share Project Update: Designer RFP Contracting on Twitter Share Project Update: Designer RFP Contracting on Linkedin Email Project Update: Designer RFP Contracting linkThe City of Somerville has taken an exciting step forward in the development of the Kennedy Playground, a project aimed at creating a welcoming and accessible play space for children and families of all abilities. In the late winter, the City issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking a qualified Landscape Architecture firm to lead the design process. The RFP generated strong interest, resulting in five (5) proposals submitted by firms with experience in inclusive and community-centered design.
Following a comprehensive review process, the City’s evaluation team carefully assessed all submissions based on qualifications, design philosophy, relevant experience, and understanding of the project goals. After narrowing the field, two firms were invited to participate in interviews to further explore their vision and approach. Based on these interviews and overall evaluations, the City identified a preferred firm that aligns strongly with the project's values and objectives.
A formal offer has been extended, and contract negotiations are currently in progress. We anticipate finalizing and executing the contract by early May. Once the design contract is in place, the next phase of the project will begin: community engagement.
Your Voice Matters!
Community input will play a central role in shaping the design of the Kennedy Playground. The City will host opportunities for residents and School community members to share their ideas, concerns, and priorities to ensure the playground reflects the diverse needs of the Somerville community. Whether you’re a parent, caregiver, educator, accessibility advocate, or simply a neighbor with a passion for public spaces, your feedback will help guide the vision for this important site.Stay connected for upcoming engagement events, design workshops, and surveys. Updates will be posted here and on the City’s Instagram page, @SomervilleParks, so be sure to follow along.

Licensed Site Professional (LSP) Testing
Share Licensed Site Professional (LSP) Testing on Facebook Share Licensed Site Professional (LSP) Testing on Twitter Share Licensed Site Professional (LSP) Testing on Linkedin Email Licensed Site Professional (LSP) Testing linkAs part of the project, we are conducting soil testing to analyze the composition of the soil on the site. This testing is important because it will help us determine the correct method for disposing of any soil that might need to be removed during construction. Additionally, the soil testing will give us valuable information about the structural integrity of the soil, which is crucial for ensuring that the ground can support the planned construction.
A Licensed Site Professional (LSP) is overseeing this process. An LSP is a qualified professional who is licensed to evaluate and manage environmental issues related to sites, such as soil contamination, disposal, and site remediation. They play a key role in ensuring that the construction site is safe and compliant with environmental regulations. The LSP will guide us in determining how to handle any potential environmental concerns and ensure that all necessary precautions are taken during the project.
The schedule will be as follows:
Friday April 11th – Dig-safe will come and mark the site with chalk spray paint in preparation for the soil samples. We have advised them to complete the work before 8am, but let me know if there’s a better time for them to do this work.
Friday April 18th & Monday April 21st - Based on the drillers availability we like to perform the pre-clearance with the vacuumed truck on Friday the 18th and the drilling would follow on that Monday the 21st. The work will take the crew all day Monday.
