Tufts Street Reconstruction

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback on the updated proposed design for Tufts Street Along with repaving the street and reconstructing the sidewalks, the City aims to redesign the street to improve safety for all people traveling on the street. Tufts Street is designated as a Neighborway in the Somerville Bicycle Network Plan, which is a walk and bike friendly street designed to lower vehicle volumes and speeds.   

After gathering feedback from community members in fall 2023, the City has developed an updated design that includes street pinch points, a few multi-purpose parking options, wider sidewalks, raised crosswalks and intersections, and new areas for greenery and trees. The design no longer includes turning the street into a full yield condition street.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback on the proposed concept design for Tufts Street. 

At a public meeting on Wednesday October 11, 2023, the City presented the proposed Concept Design for Tufts Street Reconstruction.  

A Concept Design defines general ideas. The proposed general ideas for Tufts Street include a 12-foot-wide road with areas along the entire length of the Tufts Street to pull-over to allow emergency vehicles, garbage trucks, and cars to pass each other. This road width means sidewalks can be wider, which leaves enough space to walk comfortably and to add trees and planted areas where possible. The street is designed to slow cars and deter cars from using Tufts Street as a through street, such as taking Tufts Street to avoid traveling on McGrath Highway to get to destinations further than East Somerville. This is achieved by changing the width of sidewalks to create a slightly meandering roadway and by adding raised crosswalks at the intersections of Washington Street, Glen Street, Dell Street, and Cross Street.  

The next step after the concept design, is to figure out the details. In this survey, we look for you to give us feedback on the overall concept and any comments about location, shape, dimension, and materials of any of the street elements. Your feedback, existing conditions, emergency access requirements, and operational needs (snow plowing, garbage pick-up) will inform the next design step, where we move the concept design to final construction drawings. These construction drawings are then used to build a new Tufts Street.
