Background

As part of the Pavement and Sidewalk Management Program, the City of Somerville plans to reconstruct sidewalks and repave Broadway from Winchester Street to Central Street. With the opportunity to reconstruct the street, we want to develop a new street design that will increase safety, improve accessibility, incorporate more sustainability and plant life, and create a more comfortable street.

We aim to do this by:

  • Reconstructing all the sidewalks along Broadway from Winchester Street to Central Street, along with approximately 20 feet into intersecting street
  • Repaving the street from sidewalk curb to sidewalk curb
  • Adding accessible curb ramps and tactile warning pads to all existing crosswalks
  • Exploring opportunities for new crossings and improved crossings such as installing raised crosswalks/intersections or curb extensions
  • Identifying locations for new trees and considering improvements for existing trees such as expanded tree wells and tree bump-outs to support tree longevity and health
  • Upgrading existing bicycle facilities to provide protection
  • Making improvements to traffic signal operations at signalized intersections
  • Considering traffic calming like speed humps on streets in the nearby area

This segment of Broadway is designated for protected bike lanes in both directions as part of the Somerville Bicycle Network Plan and required by the Safe Streets Ordinance.

Anticipated Timeline

From October through November 2025, we will work to gather feedback from community members about transportation safety concerns and priorities for the future of this section of Broadway. Over the winter, we will develop a concept design shaped by the feedback we heard and the data we analyzed such as vehicle speeds, vehicle volumes, bus ridership, traffic signal operations, and pedestrian and bicycle counts. In Spring 2026, we will publish a concept design and conduct another round of community engagement. Over the summer of 2026, we will work to refine the design to bring an updated version in Fall 2026 for final community feedback. We will then work to finalize the design and prepare for construction between 2027 and 2029.
